Actress Taiwo Ajai-Lycett has recently expressed her disapproval of African women who choose to wear wigs as an enhancement, claiming it reflects low self-esteem. The veteran actress, broadcaster, and National Honours Award holder conveyed her thoughts during a close-up interview with Potpourri at an event in Lagos. Ajai-Lycett emphasized the natural beauty of African women’s hair, deeming the choice for wigs and foreign human hair as an attempt to adopt a Western appearance, signaling low self-esteem.
“We have been blessed with the best kind of hair that we can transform into any kind of looks we desire. We have to love ourselves as Africans and appreciate our God-given beauty,” she remarked, celebrating the diversity and uniqueness of African features. Ajai-Lycett challenged the notion that African women need to conform to Western standards of beauty, encouraging a stronger sense of Africanness.
Known for her unwavering stance as a feminist, the actress further highlighted the pivotal role of women in society. She asserted that women, being the source of life and creation, should be treated with respect and compassion for a harmonious and successful life. Ajai-Lycett advised, “If you want your life to be in order and successful, be kind to the women in your life. It is when the women in your life are happy that you can truly be happy. By women, I mean your mother, your wife, your sister or as the case may be.”
