He has not received an Academy Award nomination since 1977 when he was acknowledged for the drama Rocky. But 39 years later Sylvester Stallone is back in the Oscar glow as on Thursday morning the action star was given a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his work in Creed.
This comes on the heels of the 69-year-old vet getting a Golden Globe win for his role as Rocky Balboa. Also in the category were Christian Bale for The Big Short, Tom Hardy for The Revenant, Mark Ruffalo for Spotlight and Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies.
In Creed, Stallone teamed with Michael B Jordan, who played Adonis Johnson, Tessa Thompson, who was Bianca, and Phylicia Rashad, who played Mary Anne Creed. Ryan Coogler directed the film, which came out on November 25 to good reviews.
After his nod in 1977, Stallone focused on making hit action films such as 1982’s First Blood, 1986’s Cobra and 1987’s Over The Top. He had a revival when he did Expendables; the third film came out in 2014.
