The deputy governor of Edo state, Dr. Pius Odubu was almost assassinated when gunmen opened fire in a location he was in severely wounding as many as 7 individuals.
Now the deputy governor has come out to explain how he made it out alive. He said he was shielded in the hall he was in so as not to be hit by bullets.
Odubu had earlier announced that he would be contesting the gubernatorial elections slated to take place in September in Edo state and it has been rumoured that Incumbent Governor Adams Oshiomole was unhappy with this.
Odubu had been at the APC secretariat to meet with some delegates when he was attacked. His organisation explained what transpired: “Surprisingly, at Auchi, the deputy governor and his team met with passionate, patriotic (and) huge number of delegates but no sooner had the meeting begun than the gunmen opened fire outside the secretariat on both security men and members of the deputy governor’s entourage and delegates. It was such a shocking and gory sight to behold.”
Investigations into the attack have already begun in earnest and it is hoped that a culprit will be apprehended soon.
The police high command in Benin, Edo state have vowed to do whatever they can to get to the bottom of the situation. They are confident that with some of the leads they have they can bring the perpetrators to justice.
