Hours after former Inter President, Massimo Moratti invited Jose Mourinho to watch Saturday’s league game against Sampdoria at the San Siro, Manchester United Executive Vice Chairman, Ed Woodward has contacted the manager’s agent to confirm if the Portuguese tactician would be returning to his old club, Sun Sport reports.
Moratti, a minority shareholder at the Italian club, had invited Mourinho over, in what is believed to be a ploy to lure him back to the club where he won the Treble in 2010.
However, Mourinho has made it clear he doesn’t want to take over Roberto Mancini’s job.
While Woodward and other United chiefs are still openly backing Louis van Gaal, even after the disastrous outing against Danish side Midtjylland, the executive vice chairman was rattled when he learnt that the United target, Mourinho, could be going to Inter and picked up a phone to dial the 53-year-old’s agent, Jorge Mendes.
Sun Sport reports that Mendes refused to put the club chief’s mind at rest, as Mourinho is said to be getting tired of waiting for an offer from United.
Meanwhile, Mourinho says he’s keeping his options open in his wait for another job.
When asked where he would be headed next, he replied: “My next challenge, my next club? I really don’t know.
“I know I love football and will be back with the same passion and ambition as ever, having shown respectful behaviour to every manager and every club.
“So I don’t search for clubs — clubs search for me.”
