The Supreme Court of Nigeria has today revealed its decision on the case of false asset declaration brought against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki
The Supreme Court cleared the senator of all charges and let him go scot-free
Saraki was up against the Nigerian government who filed a total of 18 counts of false and anticipatory asset declaration charges against in 2015.
Over the next two years, Saraki was in court battling with the government in the Code of Conduct Tribunal, but he won in 2017 and it seemed all was okay, however, the government appealed the decision which then led the case to the Court of Appeal.
The Court of Appeal upheld all but three of the charges, returning them to the Tribunal for retrial.
Then the Senate President took the case to the Supreme court and according to them, Saraki had no case to answer and they prayed the court to have him released.
The Supreme Court, however, claimed that the Court of Appeal erred in judgment when it said that Saraki had a case to answer with three of the charges, accusing them of committing “forensic somersault” and stating that as far as they were concerned, the Senate President had no case to answer and they, therefore, dismissed the case.
