Super Eagles: We’ve no plans to employ Harry Redknapp as head coach – Sports Ministry

2 Min Read

The Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare says there is no truth behind rumour presently circulating that his ministry planned to foist English coach, Harry Redknapp as Super Eagles head coach.

This is coming as the contract of present head coach, Gernot Rohr expires at the end of the month.

Reports say top ministry officials planned to compel the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to engage 73-year-old Redknapp as Rohr’s replacement.

Dare himself was quoted to have said he wanted a competent head coach for the Super Eagles, be it Rohr or another individual.

This was interpreted in many quarters to mean that the minister was giving his blessings to the disengagement of Rohr.

But Dare’s Special Adviser on Media, John Joshua Akanji debunked the claim, saying the minister was not in the business of employing coaches for any national team.

“The ministry doesn’t react to rumours and speculations.

“The minister wants the best coach for Nigeria and he is not going to compromise on that. He said it does not matter whether it is Rohr or whoever…all he wants is for the NFF to employ the best coach period for the country,” The Guardian quoted Akanji as saying.
