The Super Bowl celebrates its golden anniversary this year. The game will be played on Sunday night in the US. The Big NFL Game has come a long way and is the most watched TV show in the United States. Here are seven things you need to know about the 2016 super bowl:
- The game will be between Denver Broncos and the Panthers’ offense
- The Super Bowl is the most valuable sports event brand in the world and will generate at least $620 million in revenue, according to my colleague Mike Ozanian. The previous record for revenue from a one-day sporting event was the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight last year, which generated $600 million in revenue.
- There was $115.9 million bet on the Super Bowl in Las Vegas last year with sports books netting $3.2 million on the Patriots last-second win over the Seahawks. Las Vegas has lost money on only two Super Bowls over the past 25 years. Vegas bets are just a drop in the bucket of the action. The American Gaming Association expect Americans to bet $4.2 billion on the game—8% higher than last year—with 97% of bets wagered illegally.
- Players on the winning Super Bowl team earn $102,000. The losers make do with $51,000.
- CBS set 30-second ad rates at $5 million for the game, $400,000 above last year’s record and 12,500% higher than the first Super Bowl. CBS will generate roughly $350 million from ads.
- It is estimated that direct visitor spending by the NFL, business, fans and media related to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara would top $220 million. This compares to $206 million for last year’s game in Glendale, Ariz.
- Coldplay will perform with Beyonce at halftime and they will not be paid for Sunday’s performance, but it is still good business for the Beyonce and the band. Last year’s halftime show was watched by 118.5 million people (more than the game on average) and amounted to a 12-minute commercial pop princess Katy Perry.
