Olasupo Ojo, who is coordinating Sunday Igboho’s legal affairs, says his client is not seeking asylum in Germany.
He noted that his client’s wife and children are German citizens, and he could reside in the country as long as he has the permit to do so.
Recall that Igboho and his wife, Ropo, were arrested on Monday, July 19 at Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic on their way to Germany.
However, his wife was released after the couple was arraigned in Benin Republic, but Igboho remains in custody after extradition hearing on the request of the Nigerian government was stalled.
“Sunday Igboho does not require asylum in Germany, he has a residence permit in Germany, his wife and children are there; so he does not require asylum. His wife and children are citizens of Germany and so, he has a right to reside there as long as he has his permit. He is not seeking asylum in Germany,” Vanguard quoted Ojo to have said.

On his client’s condition in prison, the lawyer said, “Benin prison is better than the police station, he has the right to visitation by his lawyer, his wife and well-wishers but there is nothing like freedom no matter how comfortable that place may be.”
Earlier, the legal adviser of the Ilana Omo Oodua expressed hope that Igboho’s asylum request in Benin Republic will be decided this week, although there has been no comment by authorities of the West African nation.
Ojo explained that the Yoruba Nation agitator’s legal team delayed the application for his bail pending the outcome of the asylum request, noting that they are desperate to ensure that he is not sent back to Nigeria.
