SUBEB calls for competent teachers in basic education sector

2 Min Read

Mr Stephen Alao, Dean, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), on Monday called for the employment of competent teachers in basic education sector, to ensure sustainable development of the country.

Alao told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the desired level of quality education in the country would not be attained without competent teachers at the basic level.

He said that a lot of money had been invested in infrastructural development, but the absence of quality teachers was making the efforts futile.

“Without quality teachers at the basic education level, with all the infrastructural investments made, we can’t get the mileage that we desire in education delivery in the country.’’

On teachers’ development, he urged that all state governments should key into the programme of the Federal Government, to boost the welfare of teachers.

He advised that emphasis should be placed on increased funding and the training and re-training of teachers, to ensure quality education.

According to him, the welfare of teachers posted to rural areas should be specially considered, to encourage them.

NAN reports that the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, recently pledged his support to the development of teachers through training and re-training.

Adamu made the observation at the opening of the 2015 Teacher Development Programme, organised by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) last week.

He said that teachers’ professional development was a core component of the government’s strategy for enhancing the quality of basic education in the country and a panacea to revamping the sector.
