The Federal Government has directed vice chancellors to reopen public universities in the country.
The directive is contained in a letter issued by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Rasheed.
In the letter signed by Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, the commission said vice-chancellors, Pro-Chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities were to re-open schools and ensure lecturers resumed.
“Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses,” the letter read in part.
The directive was issued days after the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its seven-month strike.
Presiding Judge, Justice Polycarp Hamman granted the federal government’s application for an interlocutory injunction to restrain ASUU from continuing with the strike, saying it was a matter of national interest.
