South Korean actor O Yeong-su, best known for his role in the global phenomenon “Squid Game,” has been found guilty of sexual misconduct by a local court.
O Yeong-su, 79, was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, following accusations of assaulting a woman in 2017. He was also ordered to complete mandatory sexual violence education classes.
Judge Jeong Yeon-ju ruled that the victim’s account of the assault was “consistent” and appeared to be based on a genuine experience.
O Yeong-su was indicted in 2022 for allegedly assaulting a woman on two separate occasions in 2017. The incidents reportedly occurred while the actor was staying in a rural area for a theatre performance.
O Yeong-su’s conviction casts a shadow over his success in “Squid Game,” a series that explored themes of societal exploitation and desperation.
The case also highlights a troubling trend of sexual misconduct allegations within the South Korean entertainment industry. O Yeong-su is not the first high-profile figure to face such accusations.
