Melania Trump stole the headlines yesterday, but not in the way she wanted. She was accused of plagiarism when it turned out that her rousing speech at the opening of the Republican convention borrowed heavily from a speech that Michelle Obama had given a few years back .
The person responsible for the speech Meredith McIver, offered her resignation after apologizing for the error. The Trumps rejected the resignation.
McIver’s explanation was that she included the passages from Obama’s speech after listening to Melania Trump read passages from the 2008 speech.
“Over the phone, she read me some passages from Mrs. Obama’s speech as examples. I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. I did not check Mrs. Obama’s speeches. This was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant.” she said.
