The Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, declared vacant the seat of Magama/Rijau Federal Constituency in Niger state.

The Herald gathered that the member representing the constituency, Illiyasu, died on December 2, and his demise was announced on the floor of the House on Tuesday, December 3, during plenary.

The speaker’s letter declaring the seat vacant was on Tuesday, December 17, read on the floor of the House during plenary by Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase.

Gbajabiamila added that the declaration of the seat vacant is in line with the constitution.

The speaker further explained that it would enable the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election in the area within the constitutionally stipulated period.

Earlier, The Herald reported that the leadership of the House of Representatives will ensure the implementation of the agreement between the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), the Bureau of Public Enterprises and the Federal Ministry of Power to address the grievances that led to a strike action recently, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila said.

Gbajabiamila also said the House would make sure that members of the union are henceforth treated rightly by the government to avoid the strike action they embarked upon on Wednesday, which paralysed economic activities in the country.
In a bid to intervene in the matter and find a lasting solution, the House cut short the day’s plenary session and the leadership of the House immediately went into a meeting with all the concerned parties.
At the meeting between the leadership of the House and the Minister of Labour Sen Chris Ngige, the Minister of State for Power, Mr Goddy Jedy Agba, officials of BPE and leadership of the NUEE, Gbajabiamila appealed to the union to “exercise higher tolerance” before thinking of embarking on strike as their action could affect lives negatively.
Although the agreement was signed at a meeting held between the ministry of power and the NUEE, the leadership of the House said it should be included as a witness to it so that it would ensure that all issues agreed on are implemented.
