Solange Knowles Chats With Toyin Odutola About Inspiration, Love of Africa

Solange Knowles had an intimate pow wow session with visual artist, Toyin Odutola apart of  NOWNESS’ series with Edition Hotels. Both ladies share a connection with Africa and present this in different forms through their work. As background, Knowles is a fan of Odutola’s work, being spotted at one of her presentation two years ago.

Odutola who was born in Nigeria but raised in Alabama, uses skin texture and color in her distinctive pieces. On the flip side, Knowles who was born in Houston but has spent time in Senegal and South Africa, uses color and life texture in her music.

“When I think about collaboration, I think about inspiration,” Odutola said. “Their work, their images, their life can be something to inspire a work of art.” Knowles talks about her “emotional” reaction to Odutola’s work and also speaks on the inspiration she got from her last album, “True”. The singer says in addition to visual art, the lives of her close girlfriends in Brooklyn were also a part of her music.
