Sokoto State Government says it has spent over N50million to restore electricity to Gada town, headquarters of Gada Local Government in Illela town, Sokoto State.
The Commissioner for Rural Development, Alhaji Abdullahi Maigwandu, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Saturday.
Maigwandu said that as a result of the investment in electricity supply in Gada town, the town and neighbouring villages would soon be linked to the national grid.
He said that many electricity poles in the town and villages were destroyed by windstorm in 2015 and the areas had been thrown into darkness since then.
”The entire works have been completed but the state government will next week replace the 2.5MVA main transformer in Gada, which was also vandalised.
”Electricity supply will therefore be restored next week after providing a new transformer.”
Maigwandu, who underscored the importance of electricity to the socioeconomic lives of communities, appealed to the people of the state to jealously guard government property from vandals.
The Chairman of the local government, Dr Abdullahi Gada, also told NAN that the development had brought a lot of relief to the people of the areas.
”The areas have been without electricity since 2015 and it has not been easy for our people.
”We are therefore commending the state government for the gesture.”
Some residents of Gada town also expressed their delight with the development.
” Life without electricity for nearly two years now has crippled our socioeconomic activities.
” But we are happy that the gloomy past will soon be over,” a resident, Mr Salisu Muhammad told NAN. (NAN)
