Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has apologised for his “inexcusable behaviour” after biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.
The incident occurred in the second half of Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.
“I’ve spoken to Ivanovic on the phone and I apologised directly to him,” Suarez tweeted. “Thanks for accepting.”
In an earlier statement, he said: “I apologise to my manager and everyone at Liverpool for letting them down.”
Blues defender Ivanovic, 29, complained to referee Kevin Friend that he had been bitten on his right arm by Suarez after their clash inside the Chelsea penalty area.
“Having reviewed the video footage and spoken to Luis, his behaviour is unacceptable and I have made him aware of this,” said Reds Manager, Brendan Rodgers.
Ian Ayre, the Premier League club’s Managing Director, added Suarez’s behaviour did not “befit” that of a Liverpool player.
“Luis is aware that he has let himself and everyone associated with the club down,” said Ayre, who cancelled a planned trip to Australia to personally handle the fallout.
“We will deal with the matter internally and await any action from the Football Association.”
Shortly after the match had finished, Rodgers pledged to review the incident and promised that no individual was “bigger than the club.”
“This is a club with incredible values and ethics,” he said. “There’s certainly no one bigger than this club, a player or manager.
“As football managers, staff and players, we’re representing this club, off the field and in particular on the field.”
Earlier that same day, it was a spectacular game at white hart lane. Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to win Premier League Champions, Manchester City, 3-1.
Spurs welcomed back Bale from an hamstring injury, who was definitely the match changer, scoring the third and final goal for spurs.
The game sprung with life as early as the 5th minute, where we saw Manchester City’s winger, Nasri, come up with a wonderful volley.
Spurs struggled for a reply for the rest of the half, not until the second half, where in the span of 7 minutes, scored 3 goals.
First, an easy tap in by Dempsey. The second was a terrific side shot from Defoe, who came in for Adebayor. And Bale delivered the final blow with a brilliant finish.
The results keeping the four teams at there previous positions on the table. With the Champions behind Man Utd at 2nd. The Gunners with a game ahead maintains a position on top of Chelsea and Tottenham, who are currently at the 4th and 5th respectively.
This gives Manchester United a chance to clinch their 20th league trophy tonight, if they come out with a win against Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
