New Orleans Pelicans player Bryce Dejean-Jones was reportedly shot to death early Saturday morning in Dallas.
Dejean-Jones, 23, was shot after he reportedly entered an apartment he believed belonged to “an estranged acquaintance,” the manager of the apartment complex said. However, he apparently entered the wrong apartment.
“After breaking in, the intruder was shot and later taken via ambulance to a local hospital,” Joshua Pool, a manager at the Camden Belmont located northeast of downtown Dallas, reportedly wrote. “Fortunately, no residents were injured.”
Police spokesman DeMarquis Black said in a statement that the unnamed resident of the apartment heard someone kick open his front door and “called out to the individual, but was not answered.” When that individual allegedly kicked open the resident’s bedroom door, the resident fired his gun.
Police revealed that Dejean-Jones collapsed in the breezeway and was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
“There is no information that suggests the deceased Bryce Dejean-Jones knew the apartment resident, or was armed as he entered the apartment,” Black told CNN.
The Pelicans confirmed the news on Twitter, writing, “Please keep Bryce’s family and friends in your prayers during this difficult time.”
