Austine Emmanuel, aka Austine De Bull, the artiste behind the viral ‘Shey You Dey Whine Me Ni’ single has explained his motivation for singing the song.
Austine De Bull, who is a gospel musician, spoke in an interview with Cool FM Port Harcourt on Thursday.
‘Shey You Dey Whine Me Ni’ became a viral sensation after it was uploaded on streaming platforms on October 28, 2022.
The song has quickly become a theme song in many comedy skits and challenges on TikTok and other social media platforms.
Its success has also catapulted Austine De Bull, who is in his 12th year as a drummer-turned-musician, to fame.
Speaking during the interview, the musician said he sang the song to prove naysayers wrong.
He said a lot of people never gave him a chance.
He said, “People never believed I could do this. Even when I met with many of them, they discouraged me by saying ‘you that have never sung before, how are you going to do it.”
Speaking on the lyrics of the song, the musician said he believed many Nigerians identified with the song because of the phrase ‘Shey You Dey Whine Me Ni’, which is a popular street expression meaning, “Are you for real?”
“I think, for the most part, there is the popular or street slang ‘you dey whine me ni’. I feel that’s why most people love the song,” he said.
Austine De Bull explained that he had been in music for more than a decade but started as a drummer.
“I’ve been making music since 2010, but I came into the music industry as a drummer. This is the first time I’m making music as a singer. I was surprised because I never expected it to go this big,” he said.
He said that the women featured in the video of the song were excited to find out it has gone viral.
