‘It was a set up’ – Housewife, trader jailed on adultery charges in Jos

2 Min Read

An Upper Area Court in Jos, Plateau State capital, has ordered a trader, Mohammed Rabiu, and a housewife, Asabe Mati, both accused of adultery, to be remanded in prison pending hearing of their bail applications.

Rabiu and Mati, who reside in different parts of Jos, were charged with adultery.

The judge, Malam Mustapha Hassan, gave the order after the accused pleaded not guilty and applied for bail orally.

However, Hassan refused to admit them on bail, and ordered them to obtain legal representation.

He adjourned the case till June 16.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Gokwat Ibrahim, told the court that the accused persons committed the offence on April 20 at Sabon Layi area of Jos.

Ibrahim said that the accused persons were caught while in the act at about 8:00 p.m. by a vigilance group.

The prosecutor said that a man who knew the housewife saw her entering a room with Rabiu, knowing well that she was not the man’s wife.

He said the man thereafter invited the vigilance group after confirming that the woman’s husband had traveled out of Jos.

Ibrahim said the vigilance group broke into the room and arrested the accused persons and handed them over to the police.

He told the court that police investigation revealed two condoms, a mattress and a bed sheet in the room.

He said that the accused persons committed an offence contrary to Section 387 of the Penal Code.

If found guilty, the accused persons are liable for a term of imprisonment of no less than two years, with an option of fine.

After the charges were read, the accused pleaded not guilty, saying it was an evil plot by their enemies to set them up.
