For many years, Serena Williams was the undisputed number 1 in female tennis, but after last night that is no longer the case.
The American lost last night in the U.S. Open semifinals to Karolina Pliskova 6-2, 7-6(5) and also lost her top ranking in the process.
Remarkably, Pliskova who she lost to is the No. 10 seed and hadn’t advanced past the third round of a Slam prior to this year’s U.S. Open. Her feat is made even more remarkable as she’s beaten both William sisters to get to the final.
This also means that Serena is no longer top of the women tennis world as her spot has now been taken by Angelique Kerber.
Pliskova is under no illusions as to how Americans feel about her and her wins against the William sisters. She said to ESPN, “Probably right now America hates me because I beat both sisters Williams.”
