Senators condemn Elisha Abbo, set up committee to probe assault video

2 Min Read

The  Nigerian Senate has raised an ad hoc committee headed by a former governor of Ebonyi State, Sam Egwu, to investigate the assault on a nursing mother by Senator Elisha Abbo.

Other members of the panel are, Senators Oluremi Tinubu,  Mathew Urhoghide, Stella Oduah, Dauda Aliu Jika,  Sani Musa,  and Danladi Sankara.

Abbo, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member representing Adamawa North Senatorial District,  slapped a saleswoman at an adult toy shop in Abuja earlier this year.

Constituting the panel during Wednesday’s plenary, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, said he had been inundated with calls on the senator’s actions.

The Senator representing Kaduna Central, Uba Sani, raised the issue on the floor of the red chamber, while the Senate Leader, Abdullahi Yahaya; Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe; and Senator Opeyemi Bamidele,  joined in condemning the action of the Senator.

But Lawan said it would be unfair on either the Senator or the assaulted lady if the Senate should pass a judgment immediately based on the viral video clip.

He then asked the ad hoc committee to probe the issue critically by inviting both parties and submit its report within two weeks.
