A Kenyan senator representing the Kakamega County, Bonny Khalwale, was lucky to have escaped being lynched by aggrieved members of the public after his driver ran a woman over, killing the un-identified woman instantly.
The incident reportedly occurred in a place called Burnt Forest Road on Saturday when the Senator was heading for a rally in Kitale.
According to News24, the woman was attempting to cross the road at a place identified as Kondoo junction when the accident occurred.
Khalwale was later quoted as saying that the woman walked onto the road too quickly for the driver to avoid hitting her.
“There was nothing my driver could do. The woman walked onto the road at a stage where he could not avoid hitting her,” he told News24.
Angry members of the public who rushed to the scene were prevented from mal-handling the senator by the timely intervention of police.
The offending driver was arrested and the senator’s Toyota VX was impounded by police.
Sen. Khalwale has however promised to co-operate with the police in their investigations, while absolving his driver of any wrongdoing in the matter.
