Saraki Meets Chairmen of 45 Political Parties over National Assembly Siege

As the dust settles on the failed siege of the National Assembly by masked operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has met with the Chairmen of 45 political parties at the National Assembly in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

According to news sources, the meeting between the Senate President and the party chairmen is to investigate the siege laid to the National Assembly by men of the DSS on Tuesday.

The security operatives had prevented lawmakers and staff from entering the premises of the National Assembly complex citing that the instruction to seal off the complex was an “Order from Above”.

Reacting to the failed siege the Party chairmen in their remark condemned the barricade, noting that their visit was to pay solidarity to the Senate President.

Bukola Saraki described the blockade as an assault on democracy while addressing a press conference on Wednesday on the incident.

Saraki further noted that the barricade by security officials was a show of shame which should not have happened in the first place.

Major news stations around the world carried live pictures of masked armed men barring the path of legislators, Senators and staff from gaining access to the National Assembly Complex; the blockade lasted for seven hours.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP accused the All Progressives Congress, APC senators of orchestrating the siege as part of a plot to impeach Bukola Saraki alongside Ekweremadu as Senate President and Deputy Senate President respectively while also accusing the Presidency of complicity.

The APC on the other hand denied the accusations and joined Nigerians in condemning the attack while the presidency also denied knowledge of the matter.

The crisis at the National Assembly had been widely condemned by Nigerians which led to the termination of the appointment of the DSS Boss, Lawan Musa Daura by Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo; Osinbajo also vowed to punish the perpetrators behind the siege.
