President-Elect, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari has said that he is prepared to work with whoever the Senate and the House of Representatives selects saying he will not interfere in the selection process.
In a statement signed by the Director of Media and Publicity, APC Presidential Campaign Council, Mallam Garba Shehu, Buhari said “I am prepared to work with the leaders that the House or Senate selects. It doesn’t matter who the persons are or where they are from.
“There is due process for the selection of leaders of the National Assembly and I will not interfere in that process.
“My administration does not intend to repeat the same mistakes made by previous governments.”
Buhari also reminded Nigerians that change has truly come.
Meanwhile the Senate has decided not to override President Goodluck Jonathan’s veto on the 1999 Constitution amendment.
While announcing the decision, the Senate President, David Mark warned that the Executive should treat the National Assembly with respect.
He said “As we finished our discussion, I think it is proper for me because of the importance of the issue, make a very simple, straight forward unambiguous statement. We are lawmakers and we will not be lawbreakers. We are not just lawmakers, we are very senior, responsible citizens and very senior lawmakers and this is the apex of law making in this country.
“Therefore, on the issue of the current constitution review that is before the Supreme Court, we want to assure Nigerians that we will not break any law in this country.
“We will take appropriate action that will ensure that democracy survives but I will also want to warn that we should not be taken for granted by the executive but once more, let me assure Nigerians that as lawmakers, we will not be lawbreakers.”
