Senate Passes Electoral Act Amendment Bill

2 Min Read

The Senate has passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill after it scaled Third Reading.

This followed the adoption of  the report of the joint Senate and House of Representatives committee on the bill, which was presented by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission, Senator Suleiman Nazif.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki congratulated his colleagues in the senate and counterparts in the House of Reps for the passage of the bill.

He said, “Let me congratulate everyone in the committee on electoral matters for the hard work they put in, and we have been able to achieve this over time and after careful reviewing. I want to commend everybody’s effort in making this happen.

“This will go on a long way in improving our electoral process and further strengthen our governance and I’m sure with this, Mr president will of course give his assent and we can now finally have an electoral process we all will be proud of.

”I thank you all for all your effort and also our colleagues in the House of Representatives.”

The Electoral Act Amendment Bill had been rejected three times by President Muhammadu Buhari, who withheld his assent while citing constitutional and drafting issues.

The Sen Nazif-led committee had addressed concerns raised by the President in a fourth version of the bill presented to the Senate for passage.
