Chairman of Senate Committee on defence, Sen. Ahmed Lawal, on Wednesday commended the military for dislodging Boko Haram from communities in the North East states.

Lawal made the commendation as chairman of the session on “ Dialogue on the role of the military in economic development” at the on-going 56th annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Port Harcourt.

He urged Nigerians to continue supporting the military in the task of defending the nation and assured that the military and National Assembly would always enjoy good relationship.

Lawal also tasked the military to win the war against militancy in the Niger Delta Region.

A don, Prof. Nlerum Okogbule, who presented the lead paper, said a professional army would help consolidate on the gains of democracy.

Okogbule also charged the military to encourage bottom up relationship to ensure information flow from junior officers.

The don advised the military to always submit to civil authority, stressing that unconstitutional means should not be used against any government.

According to Okogbule, Nigerians should always be patient with any leadership till election year to vote them out when they are not happy with the government rather than resort to unconstitutional means.

He called for the restructuring of the nation`s federalism to strengthen democracy and carry everybody along. (NAN)
