4 Min Read

The National Universities Commission, NUC, following the conduct of the 2016 accreditation process has released a status report revealing a list of 150 unaccredited courses offered in Nigerian schools.

According to the Quality Assurance Department of the NUC which is in charge of accrediting courses in Nigerian universities, the 150 unaccredited academic programs are currently being taught to students in both Nigerian public and private institutions.

The NUC body stated that for a course to be accredited, it must have passed the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards, BMAS, drawn up by the commission.

The accreditation however is necessary to ensure “employers and other members of the community that Nigerian graduates of all academic programmes have attained an acceptable level of competency in their areas of specialization”.

It further stated that the accreditation process is essential in order to certify courses to ensure “the international community that the programmes offered in Nigerian Universities are of high standards and that graduates of the institutions are adequate for employment and further studies”.

According to online news agency, Premium Times, the list of affected universities include the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; University of Benin, University of Jos, University of Calabar and the University of Abuja.
