The bus, with 41 people on board, was carrying high school students at the time, police said in a statement.
The female driver of the bus was killed in the accident, in the country’s North Island near Palmerston North.
No students were seriously injured, but some were taken to hospital with minor injuries, police said.
Kiwirail, which is responsible for the country’s rail operations, said the crossing was protected by flashing lights and bells.
The train driver was physically unharmed but “naturally shaken” by the accident, chief executive Greg Miller said.
