The Scarface remake for Universal is being rewritten by Paul Attanasio. The film is slated to feature “the common elements of the first two films: an outsider, an immigrant, barges his way into the criminal establishment in pursuit of a twisted version of the American dream, becoming a kingpin through a campaign of ruthlessness and violent ambition.”
According to IGN, the studio was keeping the story under wraps, “but ethnicity and geography were important in the first two versions.” In the 1983 film starring Al Pacino, the main character, Tony Montana, was a Cuban gangster, and indeed his ethnic origins did play a substantial role in the plot. Now, Latino-Review has done some digging and has reportedly revealed that the new Tony Montana will, in fact, be Mexican. Additionally, the remake will take place in the world of drug cartels.
