A Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ Court in Abuja on Friday sentenced a 24-year-old sales assistant, Auwal Ibrahim, to two months imprisonment for theft and escaping from police custody.
The Magistrate, Yetunde Onabanjo, sentenced the convict without option of fine.
Onabanjo, who said that the sentence would serve as deterrent to others, advised the convict to desist from crimes after serving his term.
Ibrahim of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of joint act, theft and escaping from lawful custody.
The convict begged the court to temper justice with mercy, promising he would be of good conduct.
The Prosecutor, Adeniyi Oyeyemi, said the offences contravened Sections 79, 287 and 173 of the Penal Code.
Oyeyemi had told the court that one Chioma Ejiofor reported the matter at Wuse Zone 3 Police Station on Jan. 27.
He said that the convict and two others, who have been prosecuted already, attacked the complainant and her boyfriend while they were coming out from a club in Wuse 2, Abuja, on the same date.
He said the convict snatched a Samsung Note 8 cell phone valued at N350, 000 from the complainant’s boyfriend.
The prosecutor went further to say that the convict, who was arrested, escaped from police custody while police investigation was ongoing.
He said the convict ran out of luck when he was apprehended by the police on April 2 around Zuba Area.
The prosecutor said that the offences were punishable under Sections 110 and 416 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. (NAN)
