The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command, Rear Adm. Fergusson Bobai, on Saturday in Lagos said the route march of the navy was targeted at keeping personnel fit for military duties.
The FOC made the assertion while addressing officers and men during the 10km route march in Navy Town, Ojo.
“The event is targeted at keeping personnel fit for military duties as well as foster esprit de corps among members of the command.
“In the face of current security challenges in the country, the need to keep personnel fit for operation cannot be overemphasised.
“This is why fitness and mental alertness are among the critical elements of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Ibok Ibas’ policy thrust.
“It is with this in mind that the Nigerian Navy organises the one-day route march every quarter, aimed at raising the level of physical fitness of personnel in the command,” he said.
The FOC advised officers and men to continue to be law abiding citizens, stressing the need to maintain cordial and improved relationship with the civilian populace and relevant stakeholders.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the route march started from Navy Town to Kirikiri Prisons and back to Navy Air Station in Navy Town. (NAN)
