Captain Wayne Rooney has missed Manchester United’s trip to face Dutch side, PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League Group B match on Tuesday due to injury.
A statement from the club confirmed what many already suspected when the striker missed the club’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Saturday.
“Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney has missed the trip to PSV Eindhoven with the injury he sustained in training ahead of Saturday’s 3-1 win over Liverpool.
“As expected, the striker is not being rushed back for the UEFA Champions League group stage opener in Holland, although manager Louis van Gaal did hope to have him available for Sunday’s Premier League clash at Southampton when speaking at the weekend,” the United statement stated.
This leaves new recruit Anthony Martial the opportunity to lead the club’s attack, picking up from where he stopped against Liverpool when he came on as a substitute to score a goal in his debut game.
