Rolls-Royce is working on an all-electric plane called ACCEL

2 Min Read

As we approach the end of a decade and begin another the world is drifting away from evolution-based automobiles to an electric one as we work hard to protect and preserve what’s left of our dear planet but Rolls-Royce is taking it beyond automobiles to aerospace.

The company is reportedly designing what it hopes would be the fastest all-electric aeroplane that can go up to 485 Kilometres per hour: the ACCEL , short for “Accelerating the Electrification of Flight.”

Rolls-Royce is reported to be collaborating with the UK government, UK-based YASA and Electroflight to achieve its aim. YASA is a company that specializes in the production “high-power lightweight” electric motors and controllers for automobile and aerospace, while Electroflight is a startup focusing on bespoke electric powertrains.

“We’re gaining the know-how to not only pioneer the field of electric-powered, zero-emissions aviation – but to lead it. At this point, our confidence is sky high,” Rolls-Royce ACCEL Project Manager Matheu Parr said in a statement .

The company claims the plane can travel from London to Paris flying at 322 Kmh. The battery is made up of 6,000 cells with a cooling system to meet the demands of the aircraft while making it the “world’s most energy-dense flying battery park,” according to Rolls-Royce.

“We believe pure electric, or all-electric, propulsion will power smaller aircraft in the foreseeable future- while larger aircraft will rely on hybrid electric solutions that combine electrification with evolutions of the gas turbine,” Rolls-Royce CTO Paul Stein said in a statement.
“The electrification of flight has the potential to revolutionise the way we travel and transform aviation for decades to come ensuring we can travel worldwide while maintaining a low carbon footprint.”

the UK Member of Parliament and Minister for Business and Industry Nadhim Zahawi remarked.
