Rohr: Why Victor Moses retired from Super Eagles

2 Min Read

Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has said that Victor Moses retired from international football over family and age-related reasons.

The coach, whose contract expires in June 2020, has also indicated his interest to continue on the job.

The German tactician said he is convinced he can propel the team to success in the not-too-distant future.

The 66-year-old coach revealed these in a chat with French radio station RIG 90.7FM.

Rohr said, “We no longer have a big star, because John Obi Mikel retired, that Victor Moses also retired for family and age reasons in particular … and even our top scorer, Odion Ighalo, declared his retirement after the AFCON 2019.

“We managed to find a scorer with Victor Osimhen and other playmakers: we have Samuel Chukweze who plays at Villarreal, the little Samuel Kalu from Bordeaux who plays very very well with us – one of the best every time he plays with Nigeria – so we have a very, very young, promising team, and I might like to continue.”

Appointed in August 2016, Rohr would be the longest-serving Super Eagles head coach since 1994 by the time his contract runs out in June.

As head coach, he led Nigeria to become the first African side to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He equally helped the team to a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
