Rivers accord will remove knife from Sim Fubara’s neck, set it behind his back – Shehu Sani

Former Senator for Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has said that Monday’s accord signed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resolve the political crisis rocking Rivers State will only put the governor in a quagmire.

Sani said this in an X post on Tuesday, hours after the accord was signed.

The Herald on Monday reported that President Bola Tinubu  met with critical stakeholders in the political crisis in Rivers State at the State House, Abuja.

Some of those in attendance were  Fubara and former Rivers governors Peter Odili and Nyesom Wike.

At the end of the meeting, the stakeholders signed a resolution aimed at bringing lasting peace.

The resolution said all matters instituted in the courts by the Rivers governor and his team in respect of the political crisis in the state shall be withdrawn immediately, all impeachment proceedings initiated against Fubara by the Rivers State House of Assembly should be dropped immediately, and the leadership of Rivers State House of Assembly as led by the Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule should be recognised alongside the 27 members who resigned from the PDP, among others.

However, many socio-political commentators have warned that Fubara might be setting himself up to have agreed to such conditions, a position Sani appeared to support.

He said, “I have now read the Rivers agreement. The accord will remove the knife from the neck of Sim and set it behind his back.

“The accord will bury the hatchets with leaves. The accord outwardly sells peace, but internally buys time for another round of war.

“However, it can be better if the dialogue is periodically assessed and improved upon.”
