The shooting to death of a commercial tricycle (Keke NAPEP) rider by a trigger-happy policeman has caused a riot in Rukpokwu area of Port Harcourt, Rivers state on Thursday.

The policeman reportedly gunned down the rider for failing to part with N100 bribe around 7 am today.

Reports reaching The Herald said that protesters stormed the Rukpoku axis of the Port Harcourt International Airport, seeking that the killer should be released to them.

As the riot lasted, the irate protesters also reportedly threatened to burn down the killer cop’s station.

However, security agents were said to have been deployed to break up the protest and maintain law and order.

Confirming the incident, Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the development.

The police spokesman confirmed that the killer cop has been arrested, disarmed and detained.

“I am aware of the incident at Rukpokwu. One of our men killed a keke rider this morning. The policeman has been disarmed and he is detained now.

“We have mobilised our men in the area to restore calm and contain a further breakdown of law and order.

“We are pleading for calm to allow us to bring him to justice. Two wrongs can never make a wrong. The keke driver has died and the man who killed him must receive his punishment.
