Rio 2016 fallout: Kenyan Olympic Committee officials granted bail

2 Min Read
Rio 2016

A Kenyan court on Monday granted bail to two of the country’s Olympic Committee officials being investigated over alleged mismanagement of the team in Rio.

Bail for Francis Paul, the secretary-general of the National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK), and Pius Ochieng, NOCK’s vice chairman, was set at $2,000 (about N850,000).

The judge barred them from accessing their offices, talking to witnesses and told them to surrender their passports.

Prosecutors had requested they be remanded in custody for 21 days as they investigate them for offences of theft, abuse of office and neglect of duty.

A third official, Stephen Soi, has already been granted bail on medical grounds and did not appear in court.

Soi’s bail terms will be determined on Wednesday as his lawyer said he was in hospital and prosecution has asked for time to verify this.

The prosecution in the case of the Kenyan Olympic officials accused of mismanagement of the team in Rio says it is investigating the suspects for criminal culpability.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the officials are being investigated for the offences of theft, abuse of office and neglect of duty.

Prosecutors have also requested the accused be remanded in custody for 21 days.

The defence counsel is however opposing the detention request.

NAN reports that no charges were laid on Monday against the sports officials.(NAN)
