Review Of Nollywood Recent Releases

4 Min Read

It’s April, the first quarter of the year just ended with many interesting cinema releases. With the record set by  Stephanie Okereke’s “Through the Glass” and Funke Akindele’s “Return of Jenifa” few years ago when they hit the cinemas, Nollywood films have continued to top the chart.

Its not surprising however that the under-listed films which premiered during the 1st  quarter of the year  were nothing less of block-bluster films.

BROKEN:
A social movie, “Broken” premiered at the Silverbird Entertainment Centre in Abuja on Thursday, March 28, 2013. The premiere was attended by members of the cast and crew of the movie, as well as members of the public. Broken was directed and produced by Bright Wonder Obasi.

It starred notable Nollywood big names like Bimbo Manuel, Nse Ikpe-Etim and Kalu Ikeagwu. The movie also featured Iyke Adiele, Tehilla Adiele, Mary Chukwu, Maksat Anpe, and Shalom Sharon Bada. It centers around the lives of two past lovers, who were once married.

Along the line their lives are thrown into chaos as a result of their past mistakes. Those who have seen the movie say, it’s doing well in the cinemas.

HOUSE OF GOLD:
Produced by Yvonne Nelson and directed by Pascal Amanfo, House of Gold stars Majid Michel, Yvonne Nelson, Ice Prince Zamani, Omawumi Megbele, Eddie Watson, Francis Odega, and Luckie Lawson. The movie, which premiered late last month is a production of Media GH.

The story resolves around Dab Ansah Williams, a high flying entrepreneur/business mogul and socialite who is battling with cancer and has 6 weeks left to live, according to his Medical Doctors. With the help of his long time associate and legal representative, he embarks on a mission to call all his children back home – most of whom were born out of wedlock and various illicit affairs.

The reunion proves a little more than everyone bargained for as each child returns with an agenda, setting the stage for the most hilarious and bizarre 7 days of their lives. At the end, they realize that there is just too much for too many.

BLOOD AND HENNA:
Starring, Sadiq Sani Sadiq, Nafisat Abdullahi, Ali Nuhu, Ibrahim Daddy, Beauty Sankey, Salihu Bappa, Yachat Sankey. Blood and Henna produced by the trio of Nura Akilu, Kenneth Gyang and  Ali Nuhu recaptures the story of  Musa  who return to his village after his shop has been burnt in Lagos as a result of protests surrounding the early 90s military’s two-party system.

Back home, he re-unites with his two friends, especially Shehu, a radical journalist who is now teaching the community’s kids in a makeshift school after running away from the city himself on account of the military’s crackdown on journalists protesting their handling of the political situation in the country.

Musa meets and falls in love with Saude, whose father is the richest farmer in the village. The girl is married off to him after Musa sells her father’s pepper in the city, breaking new grounds and making huge money for her money-loving father.

Their marriage is rosy at first until Saude experiences a series of miscarriages and a meningitis outbreak threatens to break-up the family’s happiness.

This is just to name a few, with a fleet of old and new stars. So grab a mini bucket of popcorn, rest back and enjoy Nollywood new releases; it’s what you’ve been waiting for.
