A Catholic priest, Reverend Father Simeon Kuro, slumped during Sunday Mass and died shortly after in a hospital in Rivers State yesterday.
The incident occurred at Kuro’s parish, Saint Helen’s Catholic Church, Ogbogoro in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
He was said to have just completed the homily when he suddenly collapsed to the floor and was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital where doctors certified him dead.
“I can confirm to you that the priest of St. Helen’s Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Simeon Kuro, collapsed today (Sunday) after the homily.
“He was rushed to the UPTH around 10.30 a.m, but was declared dead by a doctor around noon. It is a sad situation,” The Punch quoted an unnamed source as saying.
The Rivers State Police Command has yet to confirm the incident.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, said he had not been briefed on the matter.
In the same vein, the Director of Communications, Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt, Rev. Fr. Francis Tete, neither confirmed nor denied the incident.
However, he promised to release a statement once authorised to do so by his superiors.
