Referendum: California moves closer to seceding from USA

2 Min Read
In the wake of Brexit, it seems a lot of nations and states are asking themselves if they can’t do the same and now California might be on that path.
In light of this, a new independence campaign has got the go ahead to collect signatures for its 2018 ‘Calexit’ ballot initiative.

The state attorney general issued an official ballot measure title and summary, yesterday, Tuesday 25th of July, 2017.

The body, California Freedom Coalition, now has the right to go ahead with plans to collate signatures to qualify for the 2018 ballot.

If the coalition can get as many as 585,000 signatures they will be well on their way to secession.

This is not new as there was a previous effort by ‘Yes California’ to take California out of the United States was unsuccessful after reports of Calexit affiliations with Russia undermined the campaign.

After opening an Embassy in Moscow in December, the movement, which received state authorization to begin collecting signatures last year, It’s leader, Louis J. Marinell, was put scrutinised over his alleged connections to Russia.

Another separatist group California Freedom Coalition launched the same month with the support of Yes California’s former Vice President Marcus Ruiz Evans.

The group’s plan is to have the proposal adopted, a move which will then offer lawmakers two other options aside from full secession.

Board member of California Freedom Coalition Steve Gonzales speaking on the potential adoption of the proposal and its ramifications said the options would include a reform of voting rights and districts; and the option to keep California as a quasi-independent state within the union where decisions at the federal level would have little impact on the lives of Californians.
