Real Madrid’s youngsters were totally dominated by CSKA Moscow on Wednesday. The defeat remains their biggest defeat at home to any club in an European competition.
Although they (Real Madrid) had already secured the top spot since their last game, CSKA Moscow was out to clinch the third position in order to qualify for Europa league as the expense of Viktoria Plzen.
Fedor Chalov and Georgi Shchennikov scored two goals to give them a shock lead before halftime. Nonetheless, Real Madrid players found it hard to find a way back into the game.
Then, fifteen minutes from stoppage time, Arnor Sigurdsson scored the third goal for CSKA Moscow. The Russians are now the first team to defeat Los Blancos by that margin in any European tournament.
Since their match against AC Milan in 2009, It is the first time Real Madrid has lost a group stage match on their own soil.
Meanwhile, even with their victory over Real Madrid, CSKA still couldn’t make it to the Europa League. Viktoria Plzen defeated Roma 2-1 in the other group G game to claim the third spot in the group. The Russians will only be able to console themselves with the impressive result against the title holders.
After them, only Juventus have defeated Madrid across two legs in the Uefa Champions League group stages.
The result was poor for Madrid but it certainly would not make anyone lose their sleep. Solari really tweaked his starting eleven. In fact, the team was Madrid’s youngest set of players to have ever played the Champions League.
