Reactions Trail Shehu Sani’s Distribution Of 100,000 Transistor Radio Sets To Constituents

7 Min Read

Senator Shehu Sani (APC – Kaduna Central) on Sunday commenced the distribution of 100,000 transistor radio sets to residents of the 7 local government areas that make up his constituency.

According to Sani, the decision to acquire the radio sets was borne out of the desire to bridge the information gap and raise political consciousness of his people.

He stated that he acquired transistors radio sets to achieve these objectives because it was the preferred information source for people from the North.

“We come from the part of the country where the major and most important source of information is the radio.

“Radio is an empowerment, a form of education and enlightenment. It enables people to have access to information and also have an opportunity to express themselves,” he said.

Sani had in the past been accused of making use of philanthropy to lay the groundwork for a 2019 gubernatorial ambition, an allegation he vehemently denied.

In July 2015, he gave his constituents camels as Ramadan gift, a gesture that was also criticised by some elements in the state.

In an age where 6 year olds are accessing information via internet, a senator is repressing his people with an obsolete radio.

The radio is not obsolete and never will be. The problem with Sani’s gesture is that it amounts to tokenism. His job is to make good laws and ensure that the Senate doesn’t loot Nigeria so there will be enough money for government to implement projects that will benefit the people. Collecting jumbo pay and giving some pittance to the poor belongs in the feudal era. Shame on Sani and others like him.

->The senator should have invested in helping Hausa learn how to use the internet and close the huge gap they have with the southern folks.
->Radios are gradually becoming outdated and might likely not exist in the next century.

Honestly, that is a good move considering the fact that the Transistor
Radio is almost a part of their culture.
Jesters should realise that an Average Northern is more enlightened than
a Msc graduate in the other region in Nigeria
. . .courtesy of the RADIO.

Food For Thought
Why do you think BBC do broadcast in Hausa Language?

Information is Potential Power

What is Nairaland? I get my news from radio. If you want to do current affairs or deep analysis of world events, don’t even try me. Those “Northerners” are far more informed than an average southerner. The fact you fail to see how efficient (in terms of time and money) the use of a radio is doesn’t mean it’s not so.
