It is no news that cases of domestic violence are on the rise in all corners of the world. But while it is relatively easier for women in other parts of the world to quit abusive relationships, it is nothing short of a war for our African ladies, who are in the same situation.
Religious reasons, children and social expectations are but a few of the factors that prevent these women from leaving marriages and relationships where they have been reduced to nothing more than punching bags.
This is why it is commendable to see women like Tonto Dikeh who despite it all, are making real efforts at recapturing their happiness and leaving their dark experiences behind.
Unfortunately, not everyone supports this decision of theirs.
It all began after Tonto shared a ravishing new picture of herself and an overzealous male follower replied by wishing that Tonto and her ex-husband, Olakunle Churchill will get back together.
Tonto promptly rebuked the negative “well-intentioned” prayer but the follower didn’t back down as he went a step further to say that every African woman needs a man in her life as being a single parent is not characteristically African.
Another follower, @curtis_90 also supported the first man’s line of thought by succinctly saying:
@tontolet pride will not take you anywhere. A woman without a man is not responsible.
This stirred up a lot of emotions as women who have been through similar experiences stepped up and tried to redress the man’s flawed reasoning and tell their own stories.
