An Islamic cleric, Prof. Nasir AbdulsSalam, has appealed to wealthy Muslims to support the less privileged in society to cushion the effect of the coronavirus pandemic during Ramadan.

AbdulsSalam, the Chief Imam, University of Ilorin Central Mosque, made the appeal while speaking with newsmen on Monday in Ilorin on the significance of Ramadan.

The Imam advised adherents of the Islamic faith to be resourceful, spiritually sound and to give their time to fervent prayers during the Holy month.

“Those whom Allah has blessed in our society should come to the aid of the less privileged.

“Let us assist one another, it’s one of the principles of Ramadan.

“Our preparation should be in prayers; let us make supplications to Allah,’’ he said.

The Imam also urged Muslims to regard Ramadan as a gift and opportunity that could not be measured.

“Our intention is very important even before an act; a good intention will attract a bountiful reward.’’

The don cited Hadith (sayings) of Prophet Muhammad which states that: “Allah says when my servant intends to carry out a good act, I record for him a reward of good act’’.

He advised Muslims to read the Qur’an extensively and meditate on its teachings during the period of Ramadan to experience the desired change in their lives and society at large.

According to him, despite the situation in the country, adherents can still get sermons and Islamic lectures through social media, even though there might be no Tafseer (explanation) of Qur’an programmes in mosques due to the lockdown order in force.

AbdusSalam also encouraged Muslims to rekindle the virtue of zakat and sadaqah (almsgiving) to reap the full reward of the Holy month of Ramadan.
