Protesters Detained in Sokoto Over Community Demonstration Seek Justice

3 Min Read

The Honourable Attorney-General of Sokoto State, Ministry of Justice, has been called upon to intervene in the prolonged detention of 15 youths from Sabon Birni Local Government Area, arrested in connection with a peaceful protest.

The protest, which took place on August 23, 2024, followed the tragic killing of Alhaji Mohammed Isa Bawa, the district head of the area, by kidnappers on August 21, 2024. Outraged by the insecurity in their community, the youths staged a peaceful demonstration to demand action.

In a letter addressed to the Attorney-General, their legal representative, Deji Adeyanju, Esq., described the arrests as unjust, arguing that the youths were merely exercising their constitutional right to protest. “While we respect the government’s role in maintaining law and order, we urge your esteemed office to ensure the immediate release of these individuals,” the letter stated. The youths have been in detention since August 24, 2024.

Meanwhile, a press briefing organized by Deji Adeyanju, Esq., to address pressing national issues will be held today, December 6, 2024, at Deji Adeyanju & Partners, Wuse 2, Abuja, by 11:00 AM.

Key issues to be addressed include the arrest and detention of investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo, who has been held for his work exposing corruption and abuse of power. Adeyanju considers Soyombo’s detention a direct attack on press freedom and a dangerous precedent for journalism in Nigeria.

The detention of lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi will also be discussed. Farotimi, a vocal critic of systemic failures in governance, was detained for his outspoken activism. Adeyanju has described his arrest as a growing sign of intolerance toward dissent and a suppression of free expression in Nigeria.

Additionally, Adeyanju will spotlight the ongoing unconstitutional land grabbing in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He argues that this practice marginalizes communities while benefiting the elite and called for a fair, transparent land allocation process.

Another major focus of the briefing will be the lack of a strong political opposition in Nigeria. Adeyanju believes that a weakened opposition poses a serious threat to democracy, urging opposition parties to unite and strengthen efforts to hold the government accountable.
