Officers of the Nigerian Prisons Service have reportedly kicked against the planned change of uniforms that was recently announced by the Minister of Interior, Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau.
Dambazau in a recent meeting with management of NPS announced his decision to change the fatigues of prisons officers in efforts to boost their morale.
Current prisons uniform is light-green and entry-level officers are often expected to pay N6, 000 to procure them before the end of their stay at the training schools.
“The service now has only about 18 functional Black Marias. We still have prisons built with mud. We lack escort vehicles. Many of us have stagnated on one rank for years.
“ These are issues that should be addressed and not a change of uniform which is at best, merely cosmetic,” some officers told Vanguard.
Stagnation in rank and the cost of logistics involved are the main issues raised by the officers.
