A Catholic priest has been arrested after he spent a total of £50,000 (over twenty million naira) belonging to his parish on his housekeeper girlfriend.
The arrested cleric, John Reid, 70, was found guilty of lavishing his girlfriend with gifts funded by the Parish’s money and thus sentenced to 18-months in jail.
Before he was sentenced, the Judge presiding over the case, Judge Christopher Prince called the cleric’s fraud an “aberration” which was carried out for over 40 months.
The 18 month sentence came after the cleric admitted to the fraud and agreed to repay the £50,000.
