Prices of cooking gas, kerosene increased in July – NBS

The average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder for Liquefied Petroleum Gas, otherwise known as cooking gas, increased to N2,141.59 in July from N2,068.69 in June.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said this in its “Liquefied Petroleum Gas (cooking gas) Price Watch (July 2021),’’ obtained from its website on Thursday in Abuja.

It said that the increase was by 3.52 per cent month-on-month and by 8.64 per cent year-on-year.

According to it, states with the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder for cooking gas were Akwa Ibom, whose residents paid N2,600; Benue, N2,540; Bauchi, N2,486.86; Abuja, N1,806.15 and Lagos N1,840.80.

He said that Ondo, at N1,842.94, paid the lowest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder in the month under review.

“Similarly, average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder increased by 3.11 per cent month-on-month and by 7.16 per cent year-on-year to N4,422.32 in July from N4,289.05 in June.

“States with the highest average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder were Abuja at N5,050, Gombe N5,000 and Kogi N4,985.

“States with the lowest average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder were Kaduna at N3,718.09, Zamfara N3,725.38 and Oyo N3,859.97.

Meanwhile, the average price per litre paid by consumers for National Household Kerosene increased to N370.34 in July from N370.29 in June.

The NBS said that the price of kerosene increased by 7.31 per cent month-on-month and by 18.42 per cent year-on-year.

It added that states with the highest average price per litre of kerosene were Ebonyi at N520.83, Taraba N491.67 and Jigawa N457.41.

However, Bayelsa at N241.67, Adamawa N316.67 and Niger at N338.64 paid the lowest average price per litre for the product.

“Similarly, the average price per gallon paid by consumers for kerosene increased by 3.78 per cent month-on-month and by 7.88 per cent year-on-year to N1,302.56 in July from N1,255.15 in June.

“States with the highest average price per gallon of kerosene were Ekiti at N1,591.67, Plateau N1,556.25 and Abuja N1,480, while Yobe at N1,080, Rivers N1,081.58 and Bayelsa at N1,088.46 paid the lowest average price per gallon for kerosene.”

The NBS said that in arriving at the report, fieldwork was done by more than 700 of its staffers in all states of the federation, supported by supervisors who were monitored by internal and external observers.

It said that the NBS audit team subsequently conducted randomly selected verification of the prices recorded.
