Presidency: Support for Obi total, won’t change – Adebanjo

2 Min Read
Ayo Adebanjo

The Leader of Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has said that the group’s support for the presidential ambition of Labour Party (LP) candidate, Peter Obi will not change.

He said that the pan-Yoruba sociopolitical group’s support for Obi’s candidacy would not change even if the LP candidate did not get support from his South-East geopolitical zone.

According to him, Afenifere’s support for Obi was based on principle, historical and constitutional reasons of equity and fairness.

Also, Adebanjo hailed Chief Olusegun Obasanjo for standing with Obi, saying it demonstrated the former president’s belief in justice, unity and fairness.

The nonagenarian said that contrary to insinuations in some quarters, his decision not to support Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who is Yoruba like him, was not due to personal hatred.

He said he decided not to support Tinubu “because it is not the turn of the South-West”.

“We have been fighting for Yoruba interest when many of them were not born. Yoruba don’t cheat. You don’t fight for Yoruba’s interest by cheating others.

“This is just like Atiku Abubakar, who is trying to become the president when a northerner is about to leave office. Is South-East not part of Nigeria,” The Guardian quoted Adebanjo as saying.
