The commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Zubairu Muazu has condemned police officers who are in the act of collecting money as bail for offenders in the police station.
According to him, such persons can be categorized as being more criminally minded than kidnappers who release their victims after collecting ransom on them.
Zubairu aired his displeasure about the habit during his speech at the commissioning of a Police Statement Taking Room in Panti, Yaba, Lagos.
He warned officers of the force in Lagos State to quit taking illegal monies from citizens in custody as it keeps denting the integrity of the profession.
Zubairu stated, “I will advise that we stay far away from corruption. It gives us a bad name as it is unprofessional and unethical.
“We have always said bail is free and we mean it. I keep saying it that any policeman who collects money for bail is not different from a kidnapper. The only difference is that everyone knows where you keep the suspects.
“The country is hard and we need people more than they need us. Let us stay far from corruption” Zubairu said
